* Caroling dates have not been confirmed but they will only be 3 days at most, not the whole week. Do avail yourself to come down and join us in spreading the Christmas cheer within the school! Open evangelism in school is mostly prohibited but Christmas offers us a chance as Christians in SIM to share the gift of love we can't do on normal days. Don't worry if you can't sing, practice sessions will be held before the caroling days! Share the gift of love you have received.

** Instead of the usual Christmas parties CF organizes every year, having an outreach event this time round aims to help us understand that Christmas is not only for Christians but also for those who have yet to know the Lord. Spending a day at St Luke's Eldercare with the elderly celebrating Christmas gives us the opportunity to do just that. Some of the elderly there may not be as fortunate as us having our families to celebrate Christmas with. Therefore let us go and share some love with them, bringing Christ with us. More information will be provided in the days to come.

Corporate Meeting This Wednesday

Dear Folks, we'll be having our corporate meeting this Wednesday, 2nd November. As usual, we'll meet at the canteen at 6pm before proceeding to our allocated room, 4.17C.

Once again, the topic of the corporate meeting is "Predestination vs Free will". Guest speaker Mr Winston Tay has been invited to speak on the topic. To get maximum returns out of your time invested in coming for the corporate meeting, the following questions may provide some food for thought ahead of Wednesday. If you have answers to them, great! If not, even better! You can direct these questions to our speaker.

Arminianism (free will) is more appealing and simpler to understand. It is because it gives a more acceptable answer to the problem of evil. Arminianism says God permits us to do evil. Sounds better, protects the image of God. It also seems more compatible with the love of God. God wanting all to be saved but yet not preventing the free will of man is consistent with love. The harder questions are mostly targeted at Calvinism (predestination) therefore most questions are pro-Arminian.

1. Doesn't Calvinism make people into puppets? If God directs the human will, won't it just seem like we're actors in a play?

2. If we have free will, the will to choose whether to believe in God, then how can we say God is in total control? How can God's sovereignty be explained?

3. How can man be held accountable for his actions if he does not have free will? Is it fair for God to judge us as sinners then?

4. Calvinism makes God inconsistent. He offers the gospel to all men, yet all cannot believe. Isn't God deceitful, offering man with one hand and taking away with another?

5. How do we reconcile the fact that "God chose some to be saved" vs "God desires all to be saved."?

6. Why all the fuss? Why didn't God just elect all to be saved?

These questions are by no means exhaustive. Questions posted here are possibly the FAQs of "predestination" vs "free will". Feel free to post more questions on the SIM-SCF Facebook page for the benefit of the larger population.

Topic for Next Corporate Meeting: Predestination vs Free will

Perhaps you heard about the group of theologians who were discussing the doctrines of predestination and free will. When the argument became heated, the dissidents split into two groups. One man, unable to make up his mind which group to join, slipped into the predestination crowd. Challenged as to why he was there, he replied, "I came here of my own free will."

The group retorted, "Free will! You don't belong here!" So he retreated to the opposing group and when asked why he switched responded, "I was sent here."

"Get out," they stormed. "You can't join us unless you come of your own free will!" The confused man was left out in the cold.

Perhaps you, yourself, have probably participated in a discussion about predestination versus free will and concluded that the matter was either too complex or else irrelevant. Since there are Christians on both sides of the issues, you may be tempted to conclude that the controversy is really not that important.

Well then Mr Martin Luther has a word for you. He said that those people who are not interested in this issue "shall know nothing whatever of Christian matters and shall be far behind all the people of the earth. He that does not feel this, let him confess that he is no Christian." Wow, those aren't just words. Those are strong words.

Or maybe you do know all about predestination and free will. Perhaps you've heard about John Calvin's famous five points of Calvinism, T.U.L.I.P., and that the reason only some of the race of sinful men came to faith must be attributed to the eternal council of God. Or you possibly chanced upon John Wesley's Arminian quote on predestination calling it a doctrine "full of blasphemy", that predestination represents God to be "a hypocrite, a deceiver of the people, a man void of common sincerity". Perhaps you already have taken a side and wonder why on earth would anyone be on the opposite side.

My point here is this. Even if you know, or don't know, or know nothing about predestination and free will, I urge you to join us, SIM-Students' Christian Fellowship, on the 2nd of November, as we listen to our guest speaker Mr Winston Tay from Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church regarding this controversial topic.

Don't be left in the cold.

Ephesians BS 1

Hello dear CF-ers!

On Wednesday September 7th 2011, we began our 4-month long journey on the book of Ephesians. We extend our warm welcome to the freshmen who joined us. We also welcome back our seniors who have certainly make good use of the holiday given to them. Everyone came together to study the Word of God after a long hiatus, facilitated by the wonderful cell-group leaders of each of the 4 CGs. Kudos to everyone who attended the first bible-study! It was an open, fruitful discussion about the Word, as well as about ourselves. We are blessed by the fact that God predestined us to be His children through the work done on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ, lifted us to be heirs to His glorious inheritance and guaranteed it through the mark of the Holy Spirit. Such grace is accorded to us, who were utter sinners with no hope of salvation. We have to worship Him for His unending love for us and be in awe of His mighty power and authority. We thank God for being among us and led us through that wonderful time of sharing and discussion. I also thank Him for bringing in people from different backgrounds so we can understanding the true meaning of "one body in Christ".

Exactly one week prior, Jeremiah conducted an excellent overview on the book, which provided us with the correct contextual framework to have a deeper understanding about this Pauline epistle. We must bear in mind that Paul lived in a different era from us. We need put the social, political and cultural context of that era into perspective before we begin our journey. Despite that, God's message for all of us transcends the boundary of time. The God of Paul's era is the same as the God of our current era. The question now is how are we going to live out this message. Throughout this series of 10 bible studies, there will be many thought-provoking questions on how are we going to apply the concepts, ideas and message of the book of Ephesians into our daily lives. There must be a rock-solid biblical foundation to everything that we do; otherwise, we will be no different from the other non-believers. Knowledge of the Word is never enough; we need to live out the Word. The questions are geared to encourage self-reflection and exchange of ideas on how to live a life that glorify His name. Everyone, Christians and non-christians alike, watches our life constantly to look out for signs of God's work in us.

Having known about our spiritual blessings in BS 1, we need to bring these blessings to the people around us. Christianity is never just about knowledge. It is also about action. Jesus' life is one of constant movement and activity. You can find him teaching about the Word one day, then healing the sick and casting out demons on another. He traveled throughout Galilee and Jerusalem in His 3 years of ministry. He even sacrificed sleep to pray to our Heavenly Father throughout the night. He was doing just that on the night of His arrest. Keeping in mind of our theme of the year "Living Christ Inside Out", action and activity is a very important aspect of our programme for this annual year. We provide you with the chance to bring your friends along to join our activity so they may get to know about us and the Saviour that we believe in. This is the chance to live out the Word of God. EPL (Eat.Pray.Live) is right round the corner. Have you invited your friends to join us in a time of interaction and sharing of God's love through sports? You should know what to do... :)

Hi CFers, trust you've had a good break.

As for the freshmen, hope your classes have been excellent so far!

The theme for CF this year is 'Taking Roots, Bearing Fruits', taken from Galatians 5:22-23. In the words of our Chairperson, Gabriel:
"- Going back to the roots (the word), in turn bearing the fruits of the spirit
- Seeing ourselves as seeds sown by God into the lives of others, taking root meaning being an influence in their lives, and bearing fruits as directing them to God, even salvation ".

The reason for this theme is to firmly establish CFers in the Word before going out into the marketplace. Working, especially in a secular environment, may cause us to lose our focus on Jesus if our roots are not firmly grounded in our Christian beliefs; just like what Jesus said in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-9).

This coming Wednesday the 1st of September 2010, we're having our first corporate meeting for the 2010/ 2011 academic year! The speaker will be Ps David Lee, the youth pastor of Church of Singapore (Balestier). He was previously the Kent Ridge Hall Varsity Christian Fellowship chairperson for 2 years; a part of our FES family!

Our topic for this session is "Where is God? - (in your life)", focusing on a Christ-centred life as a student. The topic will revolve around Matthew 6:33. Please ask if you have any questions, as there will be a 15-minute Q&A session. "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened." - Luke 11:10 (NKJV).

The venue is LT 2.18 in SIM HQ. We will be meeting at 6.00p.m. for dinner in the canteen, as usual! The session proper will start at 7.00p.m. SHARP, and will last until 10.00p.m..

The first major CF activity after a long rest! Our camp theme is based on James 1:22-24.

The camp will be held at the Boys Brigade/ Girls Brigade camp site at Sembawang, from the 16th (3.00pm) till the 18th of July (11.00am). If you can only come slightly later, or have to leave slightly earlier, that's perfectly alright! We have exciting activities planned just for you!

This is a great avenue to make new friends, especially lecture partners so you don't have to attend lectures by yourself!

Come join us in blessing the international students staying at the dorms at SIM Ulu Pandan! This event is part of an ongoing SIM CF tradition (from, obviously, Love SIM 1 and Love SIM 2!)

Some of the students there are feeling very down and lonely; let's go there and be a blessing to them by:

i) Express concern and care for the hostelites’ emotional and physical well-being in a tangible manner.

ii) Making the presence of SIM Students’ Christian fellowship (English side and IFG) known.

iii) Befriending the hostelites and establishing rapport for future hall activities that are to be organized.

We will be distributing specially-packed packages to the students. Your job is to go from door-to-door and pass the packages to the international students, as well as befriend them and make them know that they are not alone here!

The actual distribution day is on the 22nd of October from 6pm to 8.30 pm at SIM ulu pandan campus so come!

We will also need people to help prepare the packages! We’ll be packing on Monday the 19^th of October (short notice, sorry!) at SIM Ulu Pandan.

Trust that you've enjoyed the movie last week, and the sharing of what faith is in a more personal way in your cell group.

This week, instead of our usual cell group meetings elsewhere, we're going back to our IBS (Inductive Bible Study) lesson, where we learn more about how to read the bible in a more in-depth manner. Please pray for Maylan, our staff worker and conductor of the session, as she introduces to us the skills and ways to read the bible more comprehensively.

The room is at 2.16, and it starts at 7pm. We'll be meeting for dinner as usual at 6pm at the canteen.

Footprints in the sand...

LOVE SIM and April updates

Oh yes!100 apples were given out just within few hours. Really want to give all praise unto Him as it was really heart warming to see how the staffs and lecturers were blessed!Although we might have left out the rest of the school staffs or lecturers, we shall continue to remember them in our prayers ya?
These are the people who are precious in His eyes and the ones who give us the care in our school!
May His favor and blessings rain upon them , Amen!;)

Perfect Love

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. —1 John 4:18

A wise man once wrote, "When love comes, fear goes."

I know so many Christians who are tormented by feelings of self-doubt, worthlessness, and sinfulness. They think they must do something to make God love them more. Yet the apostle John said that "as [Jesus] is, so are we in this world" (1 John 4:17). In other words, we share the same confidence that Jesus has in knowing that the Father loves us with perfect love.

Because Jesus accomplished our redemption on the cross, all judgment for sin is behind Him and us, and the sin question is forever settled. We now face no condemnation.

This removes fear. For as John wrote, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear" (v.18). The "fear" of which John spoke is fear of judgment. But we have nothing to fear, for "there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Fear is driven out by God's "perfect love."

We're forgiven for all our sins, held fast by God's love, and destined to enjoy eternal fellowship with Him, not because of anything we have done but because He has done everything for us. "In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us" (1 John 4:10). That's perfect love!

It was love that heard my pleadings
When I cried out in my sin;
It was love that gave me comfort;
It was love that took me in.

We won't fear God's judgment when we know His forgiving love.

It's been some time for any updates from this blog and I'm here to encourage you guys who are preparing for the UOL prelims, exams, to persevere ! And for those who are in other courses, you guys too! You all are remembered in my prayer and don't give up k! I know sometimes we may feel weary and stressed about this face of period especially towards exams, but remember once again that it's not by our strength, not by our wisdom, but it is His grace that keep us moving forward!

We are one body in Christ, one big family, and each and everyone of you are precious in His eyes and in my heart too!

Let's continue to spur on another, rejoice in His Presence and Goodness!

CF Goes to Flea.Fly.Flo.Fun

SIM-SCF will be going out again, and this time round, not to any museum or nature parks, but to FLEA.FLY.FLO.FUN!

What's that??? A flea market event where u can sell and buy pre-loved and brand new items.

Objective of this event: To help raise funds where money collected from sales will be as a contribution from SIM-SCF to FES (Fellowship of Evangelical Students) Singapore.

Bring along your treasures (note: only fashion apparels and related stuff, no old storybooks / antiques) and get ready for those digging, hunting and bargaining from people who will be coming down on that day too!

It will be a first-time event for SIM-SCF, so do come join us to bask in hawking your wares or bring on your small purses to bring home big deals from our stall! :)

A PLAN FOR ADVERSITY

Joseph, her fiance, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. - Matthew 1:19 -

At some point, the conversation got awkward. Mary informed Joseph of the stunning news that she was pregnant. At that moment, the only thing he knew for sure was that the baby wasn’t his. Abstinence nullifies the need for a paternity test. Mary’s explanation made sense in an impossible way. She could be pregnant if God wanted her in that state, but Joseph had never heard of a woman becoming pregnant without a man being involved. He knew that some of the most remarkable women in Jewish history had gotten unexpectedly pregnant, but all of them had had some assistance from their husbands. We don’t know his original conclusions. At worst, he decided Mary was lying. At best, he assumed that God had other plans for her since he hadn’t been included in the process. In either case (or somewhere between), he planned to distance himself from her.

Joseph might have acted out his decision in a number of ways. He could have publicly shamed Mary by rejecting her. He could have demanded that she be stoned as an adulteress. He could have simply left town.

Instead, Joseph planned to act in a way that didn’t violate his integrity or expose Mary to public ridicule. Apparently the feelings and commitment on his side that led to their betrothal were still intact. He didn’t respond to perceived rejection with rejection. Instead, he responded as a godly person in the face of baffling circumstances.

In the midst of a severe personal crisis, Joseph’s primary thoughts were (1) What does God want me to do? and (2) How can I best show mercy and kindness to Mary? He was proceeding truthfully and lovingly when God intervened with a resolution. Joseph’s crisis offers us some insight into how we can maintain joy and direction in the crises we face.

Do we give those who disappoint us the benefit of the doubt? Do we reject retaliation as a primary reason for any action we take? Do we seek to act with compassion even when making painful decisions? Do we seek to honor God with the choices we make? These questions can provide room and time for God to intervene and show us his way. Ask God to shape you into a person who responds righteously to life’s tough situations.

In just two days, two major incidents occurred one night after the other as if competing for attention.

Two nights ago, we have the vociferous PAD (Peoples' Alliance for Democracy) desperate seizure of the twin Suvarnabhumi & Don Muang airports. Not forgetting that they are now in current control of Parliament and the Prime Minister's office. The government was sent into the emergency ICU ward when its PM Somchai Wongsawat was forced board a military plane home from Peru after the Apec Summit. When he tried to call for an urgent Cabinet meeting, some members were left stranded in Bangkok after a military plane failed to charter them over. The capital is a political vacuum with the government 'exiled' in Chiang Mai. We do not only have only the police protecting the government, now we have pro-government PAAD vigilante (Peoples' Alliance Against Dictatorship) standing alongside. So who is in charge- Civilian police or uncivil mobs? To compound matters, the Thai Army Chief is suggesting Mr Somchai dissolve parliament and call for snap poll.

Will anything change thereafter? I don think we need a military coup when an uncivil coup has already been stage.

Last night, militants from the supposed Deccan Mujahideen, unlike its counterparts whose modus operandi was to resort to car bomb attacks, this time they staged a daring assault on India's financial hub Mumbai. The militants practically dashed into the railway, a cafe and two 5 star hotels with automatic rifles and went on a shooting spree. I think the Indian commandos have flushed out the militaEnough said. Time to study and worry about tomorrow's paper. Wish me luck.nts in the Taj Mahal Hotel. The other hotel is still under siege with several tourists including one Singaporean held hostage. Details are still fuzzy but it is said that 100 people have died and 300 injured.

Pause. We can assume the mess to be so 'typical' of backward countries and dismiss each of these cases a mess not worth our time since it really seems to not affect us at all, at least directly.

Partially true. But unfortunately, even our exams and frequent study should not distract Christians who have a heart for those in pain, hurt and need not ignore what happens in the real world. How do we claim to share Christ and the Gospel in meaningful and culturally sensitive way if we cannot even relate to something that is tangibly happening around us? Not to say we can’t speak but am sure if you're genuine, then concern for events around us must matter.

If in political science, in the words of Giovanni Sartori, is the search for an applied science beyond our theoretical bounds, in Christian parlance we must expand out of our insular holy huddle and embrace what is on hand either with clasped hands or bended knees.

As concerned people around, let us pray. I suggest those who are aware and are concern to sit down and make a short prayer. Pray for the peace, reconciliation and stability. At the end of the day, it is not the rich and powerful that are severely affected. It is the average shop-keeper, road-side stall auntie and uncle traveling to-and-fro from home to work that suffers. Our parents need to make a living. So do families in Bangkok and Mumbai.

Enough said. Time to study and wish me luck.

What do you seek?

Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, "What do you seek?" —John 1:38

How would you answer if Jesus were to ask you, "What do you seek?" (John 1:38).Would you ask Him for health and fitness? A better job? A happier marriage? Financial security? Vindication from a false accusation? Salvation for a wayward loved one? An explanation of some difficult theological concept?

For two disciples of John the Baptist, this situation was more than an exercise in imagination. One day while they were with John, Jesus walked by and John announced, "Behold the Lamb of God!" (v.36). Instead of continuing to follow John, his two disciples started following Jesus.

When Jesus saw them, He asked, "What do you seek?" (v.38).

Apparently John had taught them well, because their answer indicated that they were not seeking something for themselves but Jesus Himself. They wanted to know where Jesus was staying. Not only did Jesus show them the place, He spent the remainder of the day with them.

I wonder how often we miss an opportunity to spend time with Jesus because we're seeking something other than His presence. I know from experience that the more time I spend with Jesus, the less desire I have for a lot of things that once seemed very important.

coming to cf weekly. Yes, it's your chair writing to you guys but I wonder how will actually come and visit our very own blogsite. My knowledge of design are very limited but I've tried to make this place as attractive as possible. You should be hearing more from me over here, and I will try to talk lesser on Wednesdays. Haha, but yeah, I would want you to know that it's been great leading you & I just can't fully express my joy whenever I see you, unspeakable joy!

I've uploaded the funny forfeit of our hollywood stars. Thank you Ben Chia for the fun and exciting icebreaker that we had this evening! I'm sure we now all would love those with short and sweet full names more huh! I must say that the boys are better than the girls. Ha, enjoy the video.

World Student Prayer- After shots*

It was great to have all students

We had a meaningful prayer meeting and got to know new friends through praying with partners from other campuses. We felt so blessed to pray for other countries and God is indeed Faithful with His promises, and our prayers are heard:)! Let's continue to pray for the WORLD and trust our God's goodness upon each and every nation k!

48 hours in ONE DAY?

Will you give ONE DAY to IFES on Friday 7 November?

Today there are some 500,000 students involved in IFES worldwide. Yet there are also millions of students who do not know Jesus. One day, we want to see a dynamic gospel witness to students in every university - from Tonga to Tunisia, from Suriname to Samoa.

ONE DAY is this year's IFES World Student Day on Friday 7 November – 48 hours from the start of the day in Tonga to the end of the day in Samoa.

This day of prayer is one of the ways in which we express our dependence on God and our community as an IFES family. After last year's event, Eurico from Mozambique wrote: 'It is so good to meet in the spiritual world of prayer'

On World Student Day 2007, thousands of students, staff and supporters prayed for the advancement of God's kingdom amongst students around the world. Commenting on the day, Ravi from India wrote: 'Two hundred people consisting of students, graduates and staff set apart time to pray for the ministry of IFES and students worldwide at our conference.' And Mario in Mexico reported: 'Students here are quite creative and have done lots to serve their friends.'

Pulau Ubin Recce Update

Ladies and Gentlemen,

time for some update on the recce yo! There were three others along and guess what? The joyous news is - Paulina is now in the cyclers' club!! Wahaha... Ok, here are some observations and pointers:

1. Bring your CAMERA! (at least one within a group...the more the merrier)

2. Insect repellent is EXTREMELY VERY VITAL.

3. Mopiko aka 'Wu Bi Gao' is optional depending on your resistance to itch (fyi, Paulina didn't have any mosquito bites while Eugene Tan & myself, we blessed the little flying objects)

4. Covered shoes only. No slippers. (the terrain we're approaching ain't just flat roads, its challenging!)

5. Water is a must!! (as for me, 1.5 litres was consumed entirely throughout the whole recce)

Dear CF-ers and pretty ladies plus handsome gentlemen, we're having a pulau ubin outing yo!

The following are some details for you...

Venue: Pulau Ubin

Place to meet: Tanah Merah MRT Station Control

Time to meet: 0900hrs

Bring along: $20 (covers bumboat ferry, rental of bikes & 1 lunch)

Some pointers:

Preparation

Important number to add to your handphone: Information Kiosk: 6542-4108 (8.30am - 5.00pm daily)
Things to bring and/or wear:

At least 1 litre of drinking water - you can buy drinks along the way.
Snacks to enjoy a picnic by the beach.
A cap and sunblock but also a raincoat or poncho - both sun and rain are frequent and unpredictable!
Insect repellant, especially if you are vulnerable to insect bites.
Use shoes - covered-toes, laced and hard soles. (MUST MUST MUST!!)
First aid kit. (if you have one...)

Be careful and considerate on Pulau Ubin

If you stop, park your bicycle by the side of the road or trail to allow others to pass.
Keep left when cycling - be careful on any paved road, vans ply the island!
Give way to pedestrians; be hospitable even if they are in the wrong place!
Speed injures, so cycle slowly. You may have heard stories of broken bones and teeth - well they were all going too fast!
Do not bring your bicycles on to the Chek Jawa boardwalk - they are not allowed.
